Deep within the captivating rolling hills, lived a boy named Shepherd. His life was essentially unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His primary duty was to care for his flock of ewes.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the gales among the single tree on the hilltop were his only companions. Day in day, watching over his wards instilled in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. In one such instance because of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plot.
Stories of predators prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One day he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but found no beast.
The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This game continued for a couple of more days. However, one morning, a real wolf did come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is hard to website reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was in the past.
